CHRISTUS Health amputee support group offers ongoing connection and encouragement
7/28/2025
CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System offers a monthly amputee support group, providing a safe, welcoming space for people living with limb loss to find encouragement, connection and hope.
“Coming to this group helped me realize just how much I needed it,” said Donald Sheffield, a participant. “It’s more than just a meeting—it’s a place where we lift each other up and find strength together.”
Hosted at CHRISTUS St. Michael Rehabilitation Hospital, the group meets on the third Wednesday of each month and is open to current patients, caregivers and community members. Each session fosters meaningful dialogue focused on healing, adapting and embracing life after amputation.
“Losing a limb is life-changing—not just physically, but emotionally and socially,” said Christina Rabideau, rehabilitation supervisor at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System. “This group gives people a place to talk openly, ask questions and realize they’re not alone in their journey. “Each amputee’s journey is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Rehabilitation is tailored to each patient’s needs and goals.”
Rehabilitation following an amputation is a comprehensive process that may include physical therapy, prosthetic fittings, psychological counseling, vocational retraining and lifestyle adjustments.
Participants include individuals at all stages of recovery, ranging from those newly adjusting to life after amputation to those who have lived with limb loss for many years. Meetings are guided by the needs and interests of the group and often include guest speakers such as prosthetists, therapists and peer mentors.
