CHRISTUS Health marks five years of Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute in Tyler

8/17/2026

CHRISTUS Health is marking five years of comprehensive care at the CHRISTUS Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute in Tyler, where patients across East Texas receive orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, rehabilitation and follow-up care in one coordinated setting.

“Orthopedic care is about helping people move with less pain and return to the life they want to live,” said Jim Rapp, director of the sports medicine program. “Over the past five years, this institute has brought specialists, surgery, rehabilitation and recovery services together to support patients before, during and after treatment.”

Opened in August 2021, the institute performs more than 1,000 procedures annually and holds The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification in Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. The certification recognizes excellence in patient care from consultation and surgery through rehabilitation and follow-up.

Experts perform joint replacement and revision procedures, while knee-related procedures including ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, arthroscopic procedures, robot-assisted knee replacement and revision knee replacement represent nearly one quarter of all procedures.

The recent addition of a new mobile athletic training room has allowed orthopedic care to be accessible to athletic and community events happening across the region. It is a fully equipped sports medicine clinic on wheels and is designed for on-site injury assessments, emergency triage, concussion and head injury care. It also offers digital X-ray imaging to support local athletic trainers and keep athletes safe.

Rapp said the mobile athletic training room is just one example of the incredible growth the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute has seen over the past five years. It also exemplifies CHRISTUS Health’s commitment to providing integrated, accessible, reliable and personal care to the communities it serves.

“This milestone highlights more than just our institute in Tyler,” he said. “It reflects our continued focus on improving access, strengthening recovery services and helping more people move with greater confidence.”
