CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana has acquired a new high-tech robotic surgical system at CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital.

The Intuitive da Vinci 5 surgical system is used for minimally invasive procedures. It is a robotic arm surgeons completely control, translating their hand movements into smaller, more precise movements using tiny instruments. The system’s immersive vision system also provides surgeons with a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands throughout the surgery.

“This advanced device and minimally invasive technique enable our patients to receive the care they need with shorter recovery times and enhanced precision for our physicians,” said Dr. Daniel Beckles, cardiothoracic surgeon with CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana. “Patients often experience less pain, minimal scarring and a reduced risk of infection. The advancements in this technology are truly remarkable.”

This technology supports CHRISTUS Health’s high-reliability strategy, focusing on consistently advancing the quality and effectiveness of care delivered to the communities it serves.

“Robotic surgery techniques are quickly becoming the gold standard for a range of procedures,” said Dr. Matias Nauts, general surgeon with CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana. “I’m proud of the role we’re playing in transforming care for our patients and creating an exceptional experience for our surgical teams at CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana.”

The first area patient to undergo a procedure at the hospital using this new robotic technology is now recovering well.

“This technology not only enhances how physicians operate but also gives us the ability to record procedures,” Nauts said. “That’s a game changer. Surgical technique discussions are usually verbal, but now, we can review the actual procedure as a team for education and training.”

This new robotic technology will be used for urology, gynecology, thoracic, bariatrics and general surgeries.

“The da Vinci 5 is the first of its kind in southwestern Louisiana, and we’re proud to bring this level of innovation to our region,” said Jim Davidson, chief operating officer of CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana. “This investment in our surgical program reflects CHRISTUS Health’s commitment to delivering the highest level of care close to home. We’ll continue expanding our services to meet the needs of our community as we carry out our mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.”
